DELPHINIUM - BELLADONNA
These original true delphiniums are the easiest to grow and hardiest of all. They flourish in less than optimal conditions producing single blooms clustered on strong tall stalks of 4-5 ft.

1. Belladonna- Prolific bright sky blue flowers.

CLEAR SPRING- Bred for stronger stems and a height that falls between the Magic Fountains and Pacific Giants. Closely set florets bloom a bit earlier than the Pacific Giants. These were tireless performers in our garden.

3. Pink- In various shades of rosy pink.

4. Mid Blue- Medium blue flowers with a white bee.

Pests & Problems: As the plants mature and flower stalks form,
delphiniums can get attacked by aphids and tarnished plant bugs.
The leaves and stems are also susceptible to attack by powdery mildew and
other fungi. A virus also attacks the plants - it's visible effect is a severe
crinkling of the leaves. All of these weaken the plants. Insecticides and
fungicides can be helpful, but there is no cure or prevention for virus attacks.

The need for staking can be considered a problem -
the huge flower stalks will fall over
. Even if they are splayed out from the plant and bent,
as the stalks grow toward the sun, the flowers are striking and wonderful.

Keep them well weeded -
we use straw mulch .
Generous use of mulch ultimately acts as a slow release fertilizer.

In late fall cut all the stalks and leaves off.
The plants are dormant at this point.
